Poor Running Audi 5000/4000/Coupe 84-88

This is an oldie but a goodie. Car starts hard, doesn't want to idle, and is stalling. Before replacing any parts check the fuses.

On the side of the fuse box there is a set of fuses that sit perpendicularly to the fuse on the board itself. These are not spare fuses that some people mistake them for. They are for add-on's even though there is no room in the main box for them. They're for things like seat heaters and other accessories available only in Europe, and/or for the car's computer.

With the computer's fuse removed it goes into "limp home mode ."

This was a very common problem, so common that Audi put a cap labeled "motor" over the fuse. NOTICE: The information contained on this site is presented for information and reference only.
