Malfunctioning Electronic Immobilizer - '95 BMW 318i
1995 BMW 318i's equipped with the EWSII (Electronic Immobilizer) may cause you to think the starter is the problem if you experience intermittent/delayed starts.
First check out the EWSII. There are several ways that this system can malfunction causing the vehicle to seem like it needs a new starter, but the most common is a fault found in the "ring antenna " located near the ignition switch.
If the ignition key fails to operate the vehicle, or you experience delayed engagements of the starter solenoid, a likely suspect is a short circuit between the ring antenna and the conductive rubber ring which is located near the connector of the EWSII. A revised non-conductive rubber ring, part number 32 32 1 094 182, has been issued to correct this condition.
