Porsche 911 - Damaged Teeth on Starter
When replacing the starter in your 964 89-94 911C2/4 and the starter teeth are damaged, check the condition of the ring gear teeth in the starter hole. If they are damaged, Porsche recommends replacement of the ring gear. This involves removing the engine and transmission.
The new ring gear is wider which provides for better engagement, and longer life for the starter and ring gear. Failure to replace the flywheel can cause premature damage to the starter you have just replaced.
