Put convertible top into service position.

Unlock top, raise rear of top and rear compartment lid.

Unhook cables from convertible top, unhook rain gutter.

Push the convertible top rear bow towards front of car while folding in plastic rear window.

Lower rear compartment lid with top switch, do not attempt to work around a raised compartment lid, you can damage it easily.

 

Remove carpeting covering engine compartment lid.

Remove engine compartment lid, quarter turn the five fasteners. When installing lid make sure the lid is laying flat before turning the fasteners.

 

Move both seats as forward as possible.

Remove the four plastic nuts holding the passenger compartment rear wall rug attached, they are located at the top of the carpeting.

Remove the rear passenger wall steel cover, there is seven bolts and two nuts,10mm wrench size.

Remove the lower plastic engine belly pan.

 

Caution! Danger of scalding!

Coolants can be extremely hot and pressurized.

Wear suitable protective equipment.

Carefully open the cap on the expansion tank.

 

Drain the cooling system, at the underside of the thermostat housing is a 5mm allen head plug, this will drain most of the coolant. To drain the radiators you will need to remove both large coolant hoses that attach to the front of the engine.

Catch all draining coolant and dispose of properly.

Remove the serpentine drive belt, use a 19mm or 27mm wrench (whichever size nut you have) and turn the G tensioning roller clockwise and at the same time remove the belt. If the belt is cracked now is the time to replace it.

Remove the seven 10mm bolts securing the water pump, be careful of the two orange arrow bolts, these two are longer.

These bolt holes also have centering dowels, new dowels come on the new water pump. Make sure to remove any dowels left in the engine block.

The old and new water pump gasket needs to be snipped at the area of the red arrows.

Make sure to clean the sealing surface well.

 

Install the new pump.

 

Install or replace the Serpintine belt.

To replace the thermostat you need to remove the four 10mm bolts securing it to the block.

The thermostat does comes separate from the housing but you need a special tool to replace it, Without the tool you might break the housing.

If you do not have the tool you can get a thermostat already in the housing.

 

When it comes to filling the cooling system the factory approved way is to use a Cooling System Air Evacuation tool. These tools put the coolant system in a vacuum, removing all air.

If you can get an air lift follow the instructions on the tool itself.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here is the early factory instructions on how to bleed the cooling system. We do not recommend this procedure. Use these instructions at your own risk.
